The Dearborn Garden Club

The Dearborn Garden Club was organized in Wolf Creek, Montana in 1955 and federated in 1958. Our motto is “We are the caretakers of our country, its air, land, forest, water and wildlife.” We contribute to our community through the following activities: maintaining bluebird houses; decorating the Quiet Day Manor for the holidays; planting flower barrels throughout the town of Cascade and Craig; creating a friendship garden in Wedsworth Park; providing an annual scholarship to a Cascade High School graduate to attend the university of their choice; helping to maintain Joe’s Trail; participating in the adopt-a highway program; donating Thanksgiving and Christmas baskets to families in need; making monetary donations to the local fire departments and our library; assisting the Rescue Mission in Great Falls through donations of items and money; making and filling Christmas stockings for the Childrens’ Receiving Home; an donating food to the Cascade Food Pantry.

We hold meetings in the Education Building of the Cascade Methodist Church every third Wednesday of the month and welcome visitors. We have guest speakers who present programs about all aspects of gardening, canning, planting for wildlife and pollinators, and conservation. To attend a meeting, pleases contact either Colleen Mason (406-866-3536) or Marcie Bateman (406-468-9333).

Pickleball is a game that has similarities to paddle and racquet sports. It is the fastest growing sport in the country for seniors, but is also played by young participants. It can be played by two or four people on a court, but is typically played by 2 person teams, one team on each side of a court. The court is 44 feet long by 20 feet wide with a net at mid court. A ball similar to a wiffle ball and a paddle, larger than a ping pong paddle are the tools of the trade.

Pickleball is played both indoors and outdoors. Outdoor courts are available in Cascade and indoor play is available at the Cascade Public Schools Gym. We play Pickleball on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 6:30 pm until 9:30 pm. We also play on Sundays beginning at 1:30 pm until 4:30 pm. All scheduled play is indoors at the Cascade School Gym. We are often without enough players these days. We welcome new players with or without experience playing the game.

We prefer at least 4 players. If we can’t get 4 players, we typically cancel play for the day. Children are welcome, but only players can be on the courts while games are in progress. We have several experienced players who will help you learn to play the game. Some loaner equipment is available for new players if needed.

There are groups of pickleball players all over the state. We have occasional tournaments in the Cascade Gymnasiums. Please check back for future tournament dates.

If you are looking for exercise, pickleball is one way to exercise your way to better health. If you are interested in playing, please contact John Kernaghan at 406-468-9803 or send email to johnjkernaghan@gmail.com. We look forward to seeing you.

The Second Chance Ranch

The Second Chance Ranch is an interdenominational yet nondenominational church located in the upper Dearborn Area. All denominations are represented and fellowship is focused around the sound teachings from the Bible. Praise and Worship is rather spontaneous based on whatever song anyone would like to hear we try to sing, from old time songs to some of the newest hymns. Pastor Steve Austin welcomes everyone who wishes to attend.

Directions to the cabin are a little complex starting on the Dearborn River Road and continuing on that road until taking a right on Upper Sawmill Creek Lane. After four culvert crossing and four (4) creek crossings there will be a sign to Hideaway Lane on the right. Continue up that road staying left until you see the mine cars. The cabin at the Second Chance Ranch is straight ahead. It normally takes about one hour from the mailboxes.

The pinochle games are a fund raiser. Funds will be distributed to entities chosen after the June games are played. Games are generally played on the 4th Tuesday of the month and will begin between 6:30pm and 7:00pm. Hosts should call their guests to setup the time and date of play. If the host is unable to entertain on the designated day, they may change the date and / or time to one that is more convenient to the host and players. If anyone is unable to play, they should arrange for a substitute and notify their host. Non-members of the group may be used as substitutes. We have twelve teams to begin this year so no substitutes team will be required. If a team quits in the middle of the year, the host for the substitute team each month will find substitute players.

The fees are $8.00 per person per year and are paid to the hosts of the first game played in August. Contact John Kernaghan if interested in participating 468-9803 or johnjkernaghan@gmail.com. Please note the absence of games in December, January and February on the Schedule of Play.

Rules:
Play three games. Each game consists of six hands. Only one re-deal is allowed per game. If a second re-deal is desired, both couples will receive zero for the hand.
